Feb. 11, 1999 From the February 11, 1999 issue of CRN Lucent Technologies has executed a one-two punch with new products that enhance the capabilities of its flagship PBX, Definity Enterprise Communications Server (ECS). The networking/telecom equipment vendor, based here, unveiled two Definity-based products targeted at call centers and large and midsize enterprises. The first is the integration of the company's existing CentreVu application software with an ATM backbone. The ATM version links call centers at multiple locations via an ATM network and enables a host of new features, said Lucent. "What the ATM solution does is establish a single administration site for multiple call-center systems that previously were separately trunked and managed," said Zack Taylor, Lucent's general manager of Customer Care Solutions. "It thus eliminates call latencies and renders unnecessary the additional agents and systems administrators typically employed by multisite call centers." Users can ride several of CentreVu's applications on top of the ATM-based solution, Taylor said. These include CentreVu Advocate, which selects and routes incoming calls using predictive algorithms; CentreVu Call Management Systems, an application suite that permits systems administrators to manage the routing of calls to ATM-connected agents using graphical tools; and CentreVu Visual Analyst, a new Windows NT 4.0-based product, also unveiled at Call Center '99, that can discern patterns and results in call-center activity. The CentreVu ATM solution includes Lucent's PacketStar ATM Access Concentrators, which also support ATM-based video. Currently, two unnamed Fortune 500 customers are beta-testing the ATM solution, said Lucent executives. Taylor said Lucent will discuss prices when the product becomes generally available in the fourth quarter of 1999. In addition, Lucent debuted Definity IP Solutions, which adds IP telephony capabilities to Definity ECS. Specifically, IP Solutions allows users to transmit voice and fax communications over local- and wide-area data networks, intranets and the Internet. Developed by Bell Labs, Definity IP features a software upgrade for Definity, available on a trunk card, and "SoftPhone" software that telephony-enables a PC or laptop. "Definity IP incorporates intelligent routing, enabling users to set thresholds for specific types of traffic over the network," said Carl Wiese, Lucent's general manager of Enterprise Multimedia Solutions. "An administrator can, for example, program the Definity ECS to transmit all faxes first over an IP network, but never customer communications," he said. Definity IP software works as an IP gateway, converting voice traffic to IP data traffic, Wiese said. It also acts as a "gatekeeper," providing IP endpoints with secure access to the Definity system, he added. Definity IP SoftPhone users, working within the enterprise or remotely, can access Definity applications via an IP connection. They also can launch Microsoft TAPI applications and receive a screen pop based on a calling name and number. SoftPhone users also can configure their PCs in "dual connect" mode, allowing Definity to send voice across a circuit-switched network for toll-quality audio. The software supports the H.323 protocol and is interoperable with Microsoft's NetMeeting and Intel's ProShare products. Definity IP is being beta tested and will become generally available in the fourth quarter of 1999. Distributors of Definity IP will include Inacom Corp., North American Communications Resources Inc. and Pinacor Inc.
